Biography
Xinyu Liu (b.2000, Shanghai, China) is an artist based in New York.
Her practice across video, sculpture, installation, and performance, focusing on how individuals experience time, space, and identity within the context of transnational movement. She seeks to challenge linear conceptions of time, instead approaching it as cyclical and non-privatized—not a resource to be consumed, but a shared structure of perception to be lived within.
Centering her research on transnational workers, she examines how they navigate the tensions between the legal and cultural systems of their home and host countries, and how these institutional shifts give rise to emotional states of anticipation, fear, and uncertainty. She also explores the instability caused by misalignments between cultural and legal identities—asking how individuals continually reposition themselves when belonging cannot be clearly defined.
Through spatial construction and sensory engagement, her work investigates how memory is triggered across environments, and how collective memory echoes across cultures through the fluid mapping of the mind. She often lingers in the tension between stability and displacement—where the self remains in flux and boundaries stay open.
